Boone County Trial Courts

Indiana does not use a county "district court" label for Boone County trial work. The State Court Structure Map resolves the primary trial court page to Circuit Court / Superior Courts. Boone County has Boone Circuit Court, Boone Superior Court I, and Boone Superior Court II. Circuit courts are constitutional courts of general jurisdiction. Note: Juvenile cases are concentrated in Boone Circuit Court, but juvenile access is often restricted by Indiana court-record rules.

Boone County Court Divisions

Boone Circuit Court has criminal and civil jurisdiction and exclusive juvenile jurisdiction. Its official page also references extradition, name changes, title cases, and Family Recovery Court. The court history research notes that Boone Circuit Court began in 1832, with early sessions held in Jamestown, Thorntown, and Lebanon before the court moved into the courthouse in downtown Lebanon in 1834.

Boone Superior Court I was created in 1968. It handles criminal, civil, and probate jurisdiction. It is the exclusive local court for estates, guardianships, and adoptions, making it central for probate record searches. Boone Superior Court II began as a County Court and became a Superior Court in 1986. It handles criminal, civil, small claims, and traffic infractions and has exclusive small claims jurisdiction.

Boone County Court History

Boone County was established in 1830 and named for Daniel Boone. The Circuit Court was established in 1832. The county history is practical for record users because older files and references may use past court labels. Superior Court II, for example, began as a County Court before it became a Superior Court. Older "County Court" wording may relate to that predecessor rather than a current separate county court.

Historical court labels can affect a record search. Small claims belong in Superior Court II today. Probate belongs in Superior Court I today. Juvenile matters belong in Circuit Court today. Older papers, docket references, or notices may use terms that reflect the county's past structure.

Federal Courts Serving Boone County

Federal court is separate from Boone County Circuit Court and Superior Courts. Boone County is in the Southern District of Indiana for federal cases. State trial-court appeals go through the Indiana Court of Appeals and then the Indiana Supreme Court, while federal civil, criminal, and bankruptcy cases use the federal court system.
